Coastal towns of Alicante

The Province of Alicante includes a section of shoreline known as Costa Blanca. From Denia to Pilar de la Horadada, the Mediterranean bathes in a land of light that enjoys an exceptional climate.

The Province of Alicante is one of the most cosmopolitan places in Europe due to its touristic infrastructure, spectacular landscape, a varied gastronomy, popular fiestas, sports, culture and liveliness.

The Costa Blanca Beaches are divided in two sections:

The first section is formed by 90 kilometres of shoreline, from the border with Valencia to the city of Alicante. It includes:

• Benidorm.A town with fabulous half-moon shaped beaches. They are among the best in Europe because of their length (6 km from Levante Beach to Poniente Beach), blue flags for swimmers, life guards, variety of water sports and by their cleanliness and hygiene. A geographical location with surrounding mountains protects it from the wind.
• Dénia. An important and active port divides the Denia coast in two parts known as Les Marines and Les Rotes. To the north, along more than 10 km of coast are the most popular and crowded beaches: the Marinas beaches. To the south of the port, with the Montgo Nature Reserve as a backdrop, the coast becomes cliffy, the coves rocky, and transparent waters are found.
• Altea. An enclave in the Marina Baixa region, the city of Altea opens to the sea from one of the most beautiful bays in the Mediterranean. From the top of a hill, protected from the cold winds by interior mountains, it offers all the charm of a Mediterranean fishing town.
• Jávea. It is a perfect example of the varied coastal areas found in the Costa Blanca. Towards the north, the coast offers the possibility to discover the depths of the Marine Natural Reserve at the San Antonio Cape. On the southern part of the harbour, a rocky coastal area with crystalline water invites swimming, and further south, a large beach of fine sand is ideal for sun bathing with seasonal facilities for windsurf or paddle boat rentals.
• Benitachell. A brave and broken coast with cliffs that rise 100 metres above sea level. It is a perfect place for scuba-diving enthusiasts to discover attractive, interesting caves and spots. For those that prefer sun bathing, the cove known as Del Moraig offers a clean pebble beach with crystal clear water.

To the north, the Portet beach stands out as a beautiful cove with clear water suitable for windsurfers. • Calpe. This town possesses a diversified and attractive coast where crystal clear water is predominant. To the north, among its tranquil coves, Les Bassetes is notable. In contrast, the La Fossa and El Arenal beaches are lively, contain a range of services and have a manicured promenade. And overlooking it all, the 332 metres high rock at the Peñon de Ifach Natural Park, is a challenge for those that enjoy mountain climbing.
• San Juan. Just 10 Km from Alicante, toward the north is Playa San Juan, a semi-urban tourist centre with fine, golden sand, 2,900 m long and 85 m wide. It is a windy beach with moderate surf, possessing a Blue Flag, the environmental award obtained for its clean beaches and respect for the environment.
• El Campello. It has 23 km of coast with all types of beaches, from Muchavista all the way to the rocky Coves of Llop Mari or Morro Blanc.
• Alicante. A maritime front (with its beaches, a harbour and promenade) forms Alicante’s main identity. In its northern-most tip, the renowned San Juan beach extends along 3 km to the Huertas Cape, that separates it from the popular Albufereta beach. In the heart of the city, next to the esplanade, is the Postiguet beach. The harbour is the most popular area for leisure and night life, in addition to restaurants, pubs, and discos, it has a yacht club and a sporting marina.  From the harbour one can take boats to the Tabarca Island Marine Reserve- a paradise for scuba diving enthusiasts-. Finally, the Saladar beach, with golden sand and a full range of services, is located to the south of the harbour. The opportunity to practice sports is complete with three excellent golf courses, a tennis club, horseback riding and many other large sporting facilities.

Its second section, that covers Alicante to the Community of Murcia, features kilometres of coastline:

• Santa Pola is a very important tourist town. The Nature Reserve of Salinas is a place of great scenic, faunal and environment interest. There is boat service from Santa Pola to visit the Island of Tabarca. Santa Pola’s reef is another place to visit. The beaches to the west are ideal for children and seniors, those to the east are protected from the northern winds by the Santa Pola Cape and contain crystalline waters and fine sand.
• Elche. This is the palm tree capital par excellence. Besides, Elche has a coast strip more than 9 kilometres long with golden sand beaches and services for swimmers. Around the beach area, the sand is white and the landscape very exotic with dunes.
• Santa Pola and Guardamar del Segura are two municipalities that contain true historical jewels. The Island of Tabarca, across from Santa Pola, measures two kilometres long and four hundred meters wide with important areas for scuba-diving among hidden natural paradises. The Segura estuary is a beautiful place surrounded by dunes and forests.
• Torrevieja. It is situated on a great plain surrounded by lagoons and splendid beaches. Its coastal stretch begins at the popular fine sand beach of La Mata. Between the Cervera Cape and Salaret’s Point are a series of small rocky coves, in particular El Mojón and Las Zorras. The most popular beaches of fine sand are Los Locos and La del Cura.
• Orihuela. This town has 16 kilometers of coast that alternates between cliffs with transparent waters and beaches of fine sand and renowned prestige: Punta Prima, La Zenia, Cape Roig, Campoamor, Playa Flamenca and Mil Palmeras. Year after year, Orihuela’s beaches receive the distinguished blue flag according to the European Community environmental regulations.
