read moreAlicante is an important tourist destination as much for its beaches as for its hotel and touristic infrastructure. However, the Province of Alicante is much more than coastline as it includes interior lands with a variety of towns of great tourist interest.
One characteristic of these towns in Alicante’s interior are their fortresses. They are symbols of war and defended external invasions in an era when attacks originated from the sea and formed a natural frontier for the Kingdom of Castile.
Some of the most important interior towns are:
Alcoy’s urban centre is located in a valley surrounded by the mountains of Serra de Mariola, Biscoi, L’Ombria, la Serreta, el Carrascar de la Font Roja, la Carrasqueta and Els Plans.
The Riquer, Benisaido and Molinar rivers transverse the city and are tributaries of the Serpis river. And this is why Alcoy is sometimes called the city of the three rivers or the city of the bridges.
The Barxell Castle requires a visit, declared an Asset of Cultural Interest. Barxell Tower, of Muslim origin, was built in the 12th century. It contains a noble tower (rectangular shaped and located on the northeast corner) and a parade ground with a dungeon. The castle served as a refuge for Mudejar families during an era of invasions from Granada and Castile.
In addition, numerous other archaeological sites can be found around Alcoy:
Villena is an old town crowned by a characteristic landmark: its old castle of Arabian origin. At the foot of this fortress was the original city centre and the population has grown around it and among the extensive surrounding agricultural fields.
It is a border town, on the road between the sunny East and the more austere plateaus of the interior. At the same time, Villena is a linguistic divide because of its Castilian status and its border with the old Kingdom of Aragon. Geographically, Villena is located in the Northeast section of the province of Alicante and it borders Valencia, Albacete (Community of Castile La Mancha) and the Region of Murcia.
This urban centre offers a combination of solemn churches, old castle stones and a modern architecture; as progress fuses with old traditions.
Situated 25 km north of Alicante, Jijona is an enclave in the skirts of Pena Roja. The Carrasqueta mountains and its pass are also located in this municipality that is populated by immense forests of pine and kermes oak on tall mountains that offer marvellous views of the valleys, ravines and the Mediterranean sea. Jijona is known around the world for its Christmas nougat candy (turron), in both the Jijona and Alicante variety. Jijona’s economy has been based on the production and commercialization of ice cream in the summer and nougats in the winter, complemented by dry land farming. An important site in Jijona is the Els Plantadets Municipal Natural Reserve with 254.03 hectares in area.
Jijona also offers its visitors important buildings of Architectural Interest:
Located on the banks of the Vinalopo river, Elda is the most important city in the Medio Vinalopo region and together with its twin city of Petrel they comprise almost 90,000 inhabitants.
Its Castle is a fortress located on a small hill by the Vinalopo river and was built during the 12th and 13th centuries. Although it is in ruins, reconstruction projects have been in progress since 1983. The Santa Ana Church is an architectural required visit for anyone who visits Elda.
In addition, Elda is home to the Footwear Museum, whose importance resides in holding a complete history of footwear with a large number of shoe samples as well as production machinery. The Footwear Museum often serves as a backdrop for promoting quality Spanish Footwear with annual awards for the “Woman with Best Shoes in Spain” and the “Luis Garcia Berlanga” Journalism Award reporting on women’s footwear. The Museum also hosts exhibits timed concurrently with local trade shows.
Crevillente’s city centre is a combination of different urban fabrics: first, the old centre or Moreria quarters with a distinctive Muslim character, second, the typical cave-homes and finally, the modern Crevillente with newer buildings.
The following are notable among its heritage:
Industry is the main economic activity in Crevillente. Esparto grass and reed crafts proliferated in the 19th and 20th centuries and led to Crevillente’s principal activity: the carpet industry. There are more than 80 carpet factories contributing to 76% of the total national production.
The capital of Vega Baja del Segura is 233 metres above sea level located on the banks of the Segura river.
Its historic district was Declared a Historic and Artistic Setting in 1969. It preserves many monuments, six of which are Assets of Cultural Interest, as well as a large number of churches and palaces.
The vast Orihuela Castle occupies the peak and southern side of the San Miguel Mountain. Islamic, medieval Christian and modern constructions can be found there.
Orihuela has different important celebrations throughout the year:
