Inland towns of Murcia
The interior of the Region of Murcia is an invitation to relax and enjoy nature, sports and good food.
Its various areas are full of mountains, wild game, forests and crowned by castles, fortresses, chapels or convents. Hundreds of old tales and legends adorn these lands. In addition, they offer a tasty and generous gastronomy to be enjoyed during days of rest outdoors.
There are an infinite number of quiet and tranquil corners where one can get lost for a couple of hours among pines or oaks. It is also possible to find a traditional life style, sit at a table in front of a gratifying stew and enjoy a good bottle of wine from the area with a Denomination of Origin. Canoeing, spelunking, mountain climbing, hiking, horse back riding or cycling are other popular activities available.
Northeast
The Altiplano Region is formed by large plateaus, a reflection of its proximity to the plains of La Mancha. These fields are covered by vineyards, forming the wine regions of Jumilla and Yecla. This area offers numerous possibilities including archaeological ruins from the Bronze Age, Middle Age and the Roman time.
- Abanilla.
Walking around Abanilla recaptures the feeling of the Middle Ages, still present in its streets and ancestral homes... In addition, the traveller can get to know the tradition of the hydraulic mills and oil presses.
- Fortuna. Near the capital city of Murcia, Fortuna is known for its hot springs. The water flows strong there, forming various fountains such as La Higuera, La Cueva Negra or Los Banos, whose thermal springs were already known to the Romans and has since evolved into what it is today: an important Spa.
- Jumilla. Famous for its Denomination of Origin wines it is located on Murcia’s High Plateau where the coastal land meets the La Mancha plains. It is rich in history and cultural heritage, preserving many steps of its evolution.
- Yecla. The town is crowned by the castle and the Sanctuary of the Purisima Virgin. This region offers many opportunities for hiking, cycling or spelunking. In addition, Yecla’s economy is very strong and is based on furniture manufacturing and wine making that includes its own Denomination of Origin.
Ricote Valley and Cieza
One can still feel the Arabian culture in this region. The municipalities of Abaran, Archena, Blanca, Cieza, Ojos, Ricote, Ulea and Villanueva del Segura form an orchard that wind along the Segura river. In addition, Ricote still maintains a rich traditional gastronomy where its local wine plays a main role.
- Archena. The Segura river flows through Archena, a fertile town and an oasis of the region. Its history dates back to the Iberians and important remnants of this culture have been found. Archena’s beauty is completed by the quality of its hot springs, known since the Roman Age. The Spa is one of its most important tourist attractions.
- Ciezadisplays its beauty in every street. It is known for its Palaeolithic and Neolithic site, declared by the UNESCO as World Heritage. Next to Cieza is the Almadenes Canyon, one of the most beautiful natural spots formed by the Segura river. Its walls measure hundreds of metres high and are a place to practice adventure sports.
- Abarán. This town emerges between mountains and orchards. The Paseo de la Ermita (Chapel Promenade) is a must see for the traveller that wants to enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of the valley and Pila Mountain, a natural place that it shares with other surrounding towns. Its beauty is completed by the waterwheels, many of which are still operating.
Sierra Espuña
Sierra Espuña, an emblem of the Region of Murcia, has the largest arboreal mass and is one of the most luxuriant, green natural environments.
- Alhama de Murcia. It is an enclave located in the Guadalentin Valley, sheltered by the Espuna and Muela Mountains. Scores of defensive towers, castles, old walls, Renaissance palaces and noble homes are proof of its history.
- Mula. This monumental village is structured around its Main Square which emphasizes the San Miguel Church. The famous Mula Spa is located in a spectacular location just 5 km from the town. The Spa has been in use since the Roman Age and has been recently modernized.
- Totana. Protected by Espuna Mountain, the city is very proud of its Santiago Church, a building that was erected in 1553. Located towards the interior is the Sierra Espuna Nature Park, “lungs” of the Region.

- Cehegín. Its entire territory is an eternal site from all the different cultures that once settled there. Cehegin is an immense monument perched on a rock and an example of this is its famed medieval quarters, a Historic-Artistic Setting.
- Bullas. Its history is deeply linked to vine cultivation. In the city and its outskirts are a great number of old wine cellars and even some archaeological discoveries.
